“Countries Worldwide Mulling Social Media Ban for Under-16s”

Countries worldwide are contemplating emulating Australia’s move to test a social media ban for individuals under 16 years old. The Australian ban, which took effect in December, requires platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and X to implement measures to limit access for teenagers or face penalties.

The UK government has initiated discussions on prohibiting social media for under-16s, while countries such as Denmark, Greece, Spain, and Ireland are also exploring similar restrictions. Spain and Ireland are considering bans for under-16s, Denmark and Greece for under-15s, and Austria for under-14s.

Greece is scheduled to implement a social media ban for under-15s starting on January 1, 2027. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the negative impact of excessive screen time on young minds.

In parallel, the UK government plans to conduct a trial of the ban alongside the ongoing consultation process. The trial will involve disabling, blocking, or limiting social apps for 300 teenagers. This initiative aims to explore various options in real-world settings to determine the feasibility of implementing an Australian-style ban for UK teenagers.

Despite opposition from experts who criticize the ban as a superficial solution that fails to address the root issues, the debate continues. Many advocate for addressing the addictive features of social media platforms rather than imposing blanket bans.

The declining availability of physical spaces for teenagers to socialize is a concern, with youth services facing significant funding cuts in the UK. Efforts are being made to reopen youth centers and establish new youth hubs to provide young people with safe and engaging spaces outside of the digital realm.

While the intention behind reducing teens’ screen time is logical, ensuring that alternative activities are accessible and adequately funded is crucial before implementing a social media ban. The experience of Australia, where teens have found ways to circumvent the ban on mainstream platforms, underscores the complexity of enforcing such restrictions effectively.

Prioritizing community-building and offering engaging offline activities for young people are essential to address the challenges of social media addiction and loneliness among youth. Instead of solely focusing on restricting access to digital platforms, creating supportive environments and meaningful social interactions for teenagers should be a priority.
