“Tragedy at North West 200: Rider Fatally Injured in Qualifying Crash”

Tragedy struck during the qualifying session for the North West 200 in Northern Ireland as a rider lost their life in a crash.

The racing activities were halted on Thursday after the incident, and event officials later confirmed the unfortunate passing of the rider, who remains unidentified.

A spokesperson conveyed, “A participant at the 2026 Briggs Equipment North West 200 has tragically passed away following an incident at Station corner on the NW200 course during the morning’s Superbike qualifying session.

“The session was promptly stopped, and emergency services responded at the scene, but regrettably, the rider could not survive the injuries sustained.

“While the family has permitted the event to proceed, they have requested not to disclose the rider’s identity at this moment.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and team, as expressed by the Coleraine and District Motor Club, the organizers of the races.”

Road Racing Ireland offered its condolences to the rider’s family, friends, team, and all affected individuals due to the day’s events.

Spanning 8.97 miles along closed public roads encompassing the ‘Triangle’ circuit between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine, the North West 200 serves as Northern Ireland’s premier outdoor sporting gathering, drawing approximately 100,000 attendees.

This fatality marks the first at the event since the death of Malachi Mitchell-Thomas during a Supertwins race in 2016.

Furthermore, organizers have adjusted the schedule for Thursday evening. The roads are now open and will close as scheduled at 4.45pm, with four qualifying sessions replacing the initially planned races from 5.45pm onwards.
