A premature baby was born onboard an ITA Airways flight to Italy when the mother unexpectedly went into labor shortly after departing from Dakar, Senegal. The cabin crew quickly responded to the situation, creating an improvised birthing area with the help of two passengers—a doctor and a nurse—who volunteered to assist the seven-month pregnant woman.
The birth took place on flight AZ855 en route from Dakar to Rome Fiumicino on the night of April 29. Passengers on the plane, including Sandro Pisu, witnessed the unexpected event and celebrated as the baby boy arrived after just an hour of labor. Cheers filled the cabin upon the baby’s safe delivery.
Following the birth, the flight returned to Blaise Diagne Airport in Dakar, where the mother and newborn were promptly taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. ITA Airways later expressed gratitude to the crew, the doctor, and the nurse for their professionalism and swift response in assisting during the unique mid-flight delivery.
This remarkable occurrence marks the first baby born onboard an aircraft in ITA Airways’ history. The airline shared the heartwarming news on social media, wishing the newborn a life filled with happiness and health. This incident follows a similar event earlier in April when another baby was born on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Jamaica to New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport. Both mother and newborn received necessary medical attention upon landing.
